The University of Tennessee Police Department offers secure, free weapons storage for students, staff, and faculty living in university housing. Weapons which are brought to campus by students, staff, and faculty for sporting purposes must be checked in and stored with the UTPD.
Weapons are stored and released by appointment only.
Weapons Storage
Contact UTPD at 865-974-3114 to request and schedule an appointment for weapon drop off. Weapons may be dropped off at any time (twenty-four hours per day) by appointment only.
Weapons Release
Weapons are released by appointment only, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Please call 865-974-3114 and ask for Sgt. Xerxes Bell to schedule an appointment. It is suggested that you call twenty-four hours prior to picking up a weapon.
TCA 39-17-1309 & Campus Concealed Carry
Pursuant to TCA 39-17-1309 it is a felony offense for any person to carry a weapon on university property. This applies even to individuals who possess a valid Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit. Staff and faculty who possess these permits are NOT authorized to carry a weapon on any university-owned or controlled property, unless the staff or faculty member meets all of the requirements set forth in the Campus Concealed Carry Law.

The student handbook prohibits “possessing, carrying, using, storing, or manufacturing any weapon on University controlled property or in connection with a University affiliated activity, unless authorized in writing by the Chief of Police or their designee or unless federal or state law affirmatively gives a student a right, irrespective of the Code, to possess or carry a weapon on University-controlled property or in connection with a University-affiliated activity.”
