UTPD has the primary responsibility for safety of all UT-owned property. This includes academic buildings, residence halls, and green spaces on the UT campus. As part of this responsibility, we respond to active calls for service as well as routine patrol functions on UT property. UTPD is responsible for crime reports and crime statistics that occur on UT property.
The Knoxville Police Department has the primary responsibility for crimes that occur on non-campus property such as Cumberland Avenue, all non-UT owned property in the Fort Sanders area, and other properties adjacent to the UT campus. KPD is responsible for crime reports and statistics that occur on non-campus property in the city of Knoxville.
UTPD and KPD have a memorandum of understanding in place regarding the joint investigation of serious incidents such as armed robbery.
Both agencies, along with other law enforcement entities in the area such as the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, may arrest offenders on campus property or in areas contiguous to the UT campus.
College & University Security Information Act Report
Tennessee’s College and University Security Information Act directs public and private institutions of higher education to report information related to campus safety. Each institution of higher education shall publish a report that shall be updated annually and include the crime statistics reported for the most recent three-year period.
The following information is provided in accordance with Tennessee Code Annotated §49-7- 2203. The goal of this report is to assist the community in understanding the process of campus security and the related policies and procedures at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture.
The information included in this report is compiled by the Public Safety. It is made up of information that comes from a variety of sources including UTPD, Housing, Emergency Management, Human Resources, Admissions, etc.
