Community Service Officers (CSO) function as the “eyes and ears” of the University of Tennessee Police Department.
CSO’s refer information to the UT Police Department for an appropriate response and have direct communication with the police department by a two-way radio. CSO’s are clearly identifiable by their uniform and insignia.
The Community Service Officers are given a wide variety of assignments including physical security of garages and buildings, issuing parking citations, or other directed patrol-type assignments. CSO’s do walk throughs of certain areas, but are usually assigned to a truck. CSO’s assist citizens with after-hours escorts to or from buildings and vehicles. Some CSO’s are assigned to assist with vehicle boosts as staffing allows. Generally, CSO’s are assigned to areas where there are high concentrations of students and vehicles.
