The University of Tennessee Police Department has compiled a few resources and tips for students to use on and off campus.<\/p>\n

Situational awareness:<\/strong> It\u2019s important to remain aware of your surroundings so you can identify and avoid potential risks\u2014whether you are on campus, in Knoxville, or in another city. Whether you\u2019re walking or about to enter your vehicle, minimize your distractions. Keep your eyes off your mobile device and earbuds out of your ears.<\/p>\n

Park Smart:<\/strong> Close and lock all windows and doors when you park your vehicle. Lock your car and take your keys with you. Never leave your vehicle while it is running. Remove or hide all valuables from plain view. Remember where you park, take a photo of the garage or level you park on.<\/p>\n

Safe at UT:<\/strong> This is an essential tool to enhance your personal safety while at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville Campus. The app will send important safety alerts and provide instant access to an array of safety resources. Users have convenient access to campus resources and services without having to search the internet for them. This app can also act as a mobile blue phone, alerting authorities to your location should you need to. You can read more about the campus safety app here: https:\/\/prepare.utk.edu\/app\/<\/a>. You can also place an emergency call to the nearest 911\u2014no matter where you are.<\/p>\n

Ride-share safety:<\/strong> Using a ride-share vehicle is commonplace on and off campus. Order while you are inside, minimize the time you are waiting outside on the street. Before entering a vehicle, verify that the car, driver, and license plate match what\u2019s shown in the app. If they do not match, do not approach the vehicle. Ask \u201cWhat\u2019s my name?\u201d before entering the vehicle. If they can\u2019t answer you, walk away. Once inside a ride-share vehicle, you can use the Safe at UT app \u201cFriend Walk\u201d feature to have a friend or loved one virtually accompany you. Never get in a vehicle with anyone who is not registered with a ride-share app. Trust your instincts and use your best judgment when requesting a ride with a ride-share service. If you ever feel that you\u2019re in an urgent situation, you can call 911 immediately. Most ride-share services offer their own apps that have an emergency call button as well, which can also provide your real-time location and trip details. Remember, if you feel unsafe, you can end the ride at any time.<\/p>\n
