An active threat is a person who is actively threatening lives or prepared to threaten lives in a populated area. Schedule a drill for your department or building by submitting a request. <strong>You must take the Active Threat Response for Civilians class before participating in a drill.<\/strong> \u00a0We can schedule a two-hour block to teach the class and perform the drill in the same day. By scheduling a drill, you can practice what you just learned.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/safety.utk.edu\/police\/forms\/request-a-program\/\" class=\"btn btn-default btn-globe btn-lg\">Request a Program<\/a>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>RUN<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have an escape plan in mind.<\/li>\n<li>If you are outside a building near the threat, go to the nearest cover immediately.<\/li>\n<li>If you are inside the building and you are confident you know the attacker&#8217;s location and have a clear path to an exit, evacuate immediately, and take others with you if possible.<\/li>\n<li>Prevent others from entering the building.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your hands empty and visible and follow all instructions from police.<\/li>\n<li>Tell police anything you know about the shooter (location, weapons, etc).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>HIDE<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you are inside a building and the attacker(s) location is unknown, the safest option is normally\u00a0to barricade:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lock and barricade doors with heavy furniture.<\/li>\n<li>Stay away from doors or windows.<\/li>\n<li>Turn off lights.<\/li>\n<li>Block windows.<\/li>\n<li>Turn off radios and computer monitors.<\/li>\n<li>Keep yourself out of sight (take cover\/protection from bullets by using concrete walls or heavy furniture)<\/li>\n<li>Silence your cell phone.<\/li>\n<li>Quietly\u00a0report to 911:\n<ul>\n<li>Your specific location<\/li>\n<li>Number of people at your location<\/li>\n<li>Number of injured and types of injuries<\/li>\n<li>Assailant(s) &#8211; location, number of suspects, race\/gender, clothing description, physical features, types of weapons, backpack, shooter\u2019s identity (if known), separate explosions from gunfire, etc.<\/li>\n<li>If you cannot speak, leave the line open and allow the dispatcher to listen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>FIGHT<\/strong><br \/>\nAs a last resort, and only if your life is in immediate danger, attempt to stop the attacker by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Working as a group if possible<\/li>\n<li>Utilizing improvised weapons<\/li>\n<li>Committing to your actions<\/li>\n<li>Acting with physical aggression<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"background-color: #f5f5f5\">\n<hr style=\"border: 1px solid #FF8200;margin-top: 0\" \/>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/prepare.utk.edu\/ep\/active-shooter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">For more information and for an informative video click here.<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most frightening situations that can occur on a college campus is dealing with an active threat.
