Deputy Chief Severs began his career in Law Enforcement in the United States Air force as a Security Specialist. He served from December 30, 1986 through July 28, 1991 and was stationed at Kirtland Air force Base.

He began his career at the UTPD on February 1, 1992 and was assigned to the nightshift. He worked in patrol until the spring of 1997 when he was assigned to the Crime Prevention Bureau. Deputy Chief Severs was promoted to Lieutenant in March of 1998 and was the watch commander on night shift until 2006 when he was transferred to dayshift. He was promoted to Captain in July of 2007 and commanded the Patrol/Special Events Division. He was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief in October of 2012.

Deputy Chief Severs completed his undergraduate degree in 2004, graduating with honors. He has attended numerous training classes including the Southeast Command and Leadership Academy.

Deputy Chief Severs has been married for 28 years and has two children, Jessica and Luke. When not at work DC Severs enjoys outdoor activities including spending time on the lake, playing golf and fishing.
