UTPD Welcomes Two New K9s to the Force

Kicking off the start of the 2025 fall semester, University of Tennessee Police Chief Sean Patterson announced the addition of two new K9s to the University of Tennessee Police Department.

The newest four-legged officers, both Labradors, are trained in Explosive Ordnance Detection (EOD) and personal detection, enhancing the university’s safety and security capabilities. Their arrival brings the UT Police Department’s K9 unit to a total of five working dogs. Both K9s carry names with deep ties to the University of Tennessee.

  • Doc – This chocolate Labrador mix is proudly named in tribute to Dr. Spencer Gregg, a respected colleague, friend, and invaluable asset to the University of Tennessee. With 36 years in medical practice, including 25 years at the UT Student Health Center and 15 years as its director, Dr. Gregg devoted his career to the health and well-being of students. His leadership was especially vital during the COVID-19 pandemic, guiding our greater campus community with compassion, strength, and wisdom. Dr. Gregg’s legacy is one of service, care, and unwavering dedication. Just as he worked tirelessly to protect the well-being of UT students, this loyal Labrador now carries his name as a living reminder of his impact on our university family.
  • Holt– This black Labrador is named in tribute to Dr. Andrew David Holt, beloved President of the University of Tennessee from 1959 to 1970. Remembered for his kindness, Holt was so generous at giving students rides up the Hill that his car became famously known as “Holt’s Taxi Service.” During his presidency, Dr. Holt oversaw a period of tremendous growth, nearly doubling student enrollment and expanding the university’s academic programs and facilities. His approachable nature, warm spirit, and devotion to students earned him lasting admiration, making his legacy one of accessibility and care. Just as he made UT feel like a home for generations of students, this Labrador carries his name as a symbol of loyalty, kindness, and service.

The K9s and their handlers train weekly for at least four hours, both around campus and alongside other area law enforcement agencies. The dogs live with their handlers, going home with them each day, which builds a strong working bond. To maintain peak performance, the K9s also recertify annually with a nationally recognized K9 association.

K9 Holt is paired with Officer Elise Bruce and K9 Doc is paired with Officer Stephen Murphy.

“We host a wide variety of events on our campus; concerts, distinguished speakers, and athletic competitions that draw thousands of visitors,” said University of Tennessee Police Chief Sean Patterson. “Having highly trained K9s working alongside our officers adds an important layer of safety and reassurance for everyone attending.”

With the addition of Doc and Holt, the UT Police Department continues its commitment to honoring the university’s legacy while enhancing campus safety.
