Increase in Catalytic Converter Thefts on and around UT Campus

The UT Police Department has been investigating a rash of catalytic converter thefts on and around campus over the last month.

Since the start of the spring semester, catalytic converters have been stolen from vehicles, specifically Hondas and Toyotas.

UTPD investigators believe an increase in metal prices for materials such as palladium and platinum is driving these thefts. Many of these thefts have occurred in surface parking lots.

UT Police would like to offer these tips to the campus community:

–Park in a well-lit areas or lots

–Park close to building entrances, sidewalks or near roadways where your vehicle is more visible to the public

–Park in a garage if possible

–Check on your vehicle more frequently

–Report suspicious activity or people to police

If you are a victim of a crime on campus, please call the UT Police Department at 865-974-3114.
