UTPD Civilian Security Guard Mike Hancock to Retire After 25 Years

Community Service Officer Mike HancockA long time UTPD civilian security guard will retire this week after a quarter century of service to the university.

Community Service Officer Mike Hancock’s last day is February 28.

For many years Hancock has been a fixture at various UT events, from plays at the Clarence Brown Theatre to concerts at Thompson-Boling Arena and athletic events.

Over 25 years, “you meet a lot of different people with this kind of job,” Hancock said. “Most of them have been pretty kind.”

He also has served as UTPD’s primary driver of capital escort, a vehicle that picks up money from various campus departments and delivers it to the bank.

UTPD Lieutenant Jim Underwood, who oversaw day shift for many years and supervised Hancock, noted that Hancock was always dependable.

“I could count on him to be there when he was supposed to be,” Underwood said. “He worked a lot of extra stuff, like if we needed coverage for fixed post CSOs, he was available. He worked holidays, weekends and anything that we needed.”

In retirement, Hancock, a native of Norris, Tennessee, plans to spend time with his three young grandchildren. He also anticipates taking his Great Pyrenees camping and hiking.
