Mental Health Services

Along with your physical health, mental and emotional well-being play a key role in overall health and wellness.

There are resources in place for students and employees to address concerns or any overwhelming feelings related to stress or other circumstances. In working with a student or employee who is distressed, the university’s foremost objective is taking care of the individual and ensuring the safety of the campus community.

If you are a student who needs medical attention for feelings or thoughts, please call the Counseling Center at 974-2196. UT employees can contact the Employee Assistance Program, which provides free, confidential assistance to help employees and their families resolve problems that influence their personal lives or job performance. You can contact the EAP at (877) 237-8574.

Other reports of concern about a distressed member of the campus community should be made to the Dean of Students at 974-3179 or the Counseling Center at 974-2196. During evening and weekends, calls should be made to Mobile Crisis at 539-2409.

If concerns about a student are not related to an alleged violation of a university standard of conduct, but rather are more general in nature, Student Affairs personnel will contact the student to assist him or her and determine if additional resources are needed. Assessment will focus on whether the individual could be danger to self or other people.

Behaviors that all members of the campus community should note and consider reporting include:

  • Excessive or inappropriate anger
  • Significant changes in behavior and emotions
  • Withdrawal from the people and events around them
  • Change in hygiene or appearance
  • Alcohol or drug abuse, or suspected alcohol or drug abuse
  • Expressing unusual thoughts or exhibiting unusual behaviors
  • A decline in academic performance.

UT’s VolAware committee provides “QPR” training for any interested member of the campus community. It focuses on the ability to “Question, Persuade, and Refer” people who may need help. Call 974-2196 for more information.
