Using a Fire Extinguisher

Always report the fire first by dialing 911 or 974-3111.

Use a fire extinguisher only if you have been trained and feel confident in doing so. If you have any doubt in your ability to use it, exit immediately.

When using an extinguisher, follow the “PASS” method:

  • Pull the pin to break the fire extinguisher's seal.
  • Aim low, pointing to the extinguisher nozzle, horn, or hose at the base of the fire.
  • Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.
  • Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire until the fire is out. Watch the area. If the fire reignites, repeat the steps above.
